In this five week session for homeschoolers, we will be exploring survival technology from our ancestors. From plant identification, shelter building, friction fire and more, we'll explore the technologies of our past to better understand ourselves. Ages 6-12.

Session 1: Sept. 14th-Oct. 12th

Sept. 14th: Plants: On our first day, we will develop an understanding of the gatherer. We will discuss safe foraging practices as well as plant and tree identification. On our foraging walk through the neighborhood, we will harvest (with permission) plants with medicinal properties. We will then create a soothing salve using yarrow, lavender, beeswax and oil.

Sept. 21st: Animals + Shelters: We will explore animal tracks and behaviors, silent observation, and shelter building. We may walk to City Park (9 blocks to our East).

Sept. 28th: Sticks + Stones: Primitive tools helped to advance humans. We will learn about how to create arrows, stone hammers and more. We'll even shoot our handmade bows and arrows.

Oct. 5th: Friction Fire + Whittling: Fire is human kinds' crowning achievement. We will try our hand at a variety of primitive fire making including bow drill friction fire. Kids older than 9 can try their hand at whittling a stick while the younger crowd practices their knife skills using a wooden knife and Ivory soap.

Oct. 11th: Homestead Day: Everything changed when people began farming. We stopped moving around and started setting down roots. We'll make cordage, weave, dye fibers, and more.
